The car
The W123 was the car that made the diesel ordinary: a four-door saloon with double-wishbone front suspension, a semi-trailing-arm rear axle, four-wheel disc brakes and a body engineered for a very long life. The 240 D is the smallest diesel of the range — 2,404 cc, indirect injection, 65 hp DIN — and in the United States it was sold with an automatic and a 0–60 mph time measured with a calendar. Europe got the four-speed manual, which is the version described here.
